The Resource Assessment Commission estimated that forest and woodlands once covered 520,000 km2 or two-thirds of New South Wales. Of these 520,000 km2, 210,000 remain (df96U1). (la)
Nearly all the forest covering 15% of Scotland are plantations of non-native conifers (df98A2). (la) (See Section (4-B)[1] )
Scotland's original Caledonia Forest once covered 15,000 km2
and grew continuously since the end of the last ice age 10,000 years ago. Today Caledonia Forest consists of 38 scattered remnants totaling 120 km2
(df93W3). It was cut in the 17th and 18th centuries for timber, and in the 19th century for sheep grazing (df93W3). (la)
Non-exploitable closed forest in Europe occupies about 140,000 km2

[4] Africa
Africa's land area = 29.7 million km2 (se87L1). In early 1980s, 6.96 million km2 were forest (se87L1). (la)
Forests of sub-Saharan Africa cover 1.7 million km2 in 14 countries (df94C2). (la)
Nearly 4 million km2 of Africa now qualify as "forest/ cropland mosaics" where cropland accounts for 30-40% of the vegetation cover ((df00W1), p. 90). (la)
6% (1.8 million km2) of Africa's land area is in closed forest (df88B1). (la) Comments: A recent FAO definition of "closed" forest may cause this number to increase. (See definitions in forest degradation review document.)

Madagascar's eastern rain forest originally covered 112,000 km2. In 1950 it covered 76,000 km2. In 1985 it covered 38,000 km2
(df90G1). (Madagascar's total area is 587,000 km2 ). Forests are threatened mainly by subsistence needs and cutting for fuel (Ref. 10-12 of (df90G1)). (la)
Ethiopia's forest cover: 40% initially, 16% in 1967, 3.1% in 1986 (Ref. 9 of (df87E2)). (la)
The Ethiopian Plateau receives good rainfall, and was once 75% forested (df75E1).
Significant stands of timber now cover less than 4% of the Ethiopian Plateau
(df75E1). (la)
In 1938, Ghana had 46,600 km2 of forests (df90M1). (la)
In 1981, Ghana had 16,800 km2 of forests (df90M1).
Around 1967 there were 200,000 km2 of rainforest in Cote D'Ivoire
(df92R1) (150,000 in 1965 (df87B1)).
Around 1991 there were 10,000 km2 of rainforest in Cote D'Ivoire (df92R1). (la)

[6] U.S.
2.98 million km2 of the US is forestland, down by 1.24 million km2 from 1600 (df94P2).
1.98 million km2 is US timberland -- forestland capable of producing more than 20 ft3/ acre/ year (140 m3/ km2/ year) and not withdrawn from timber production (df94P2). (la)
Pinyon pine and juniper cover 304,000 km2 of the semi-arid and western US. Since the 1800s they have taken over about 81,000 km2 of grass/ shrub lands (df91J1). Comments: Over-grazing promotes the spread of pinyon-juniper because cattle don't eat pinyon-juniper, and pinyon juniper competes with grass. (la)
100 million acres (405,000 km2) of Alaska are forested, but only 15 million acres (61,000 km2) are considered "commercial" (available and capable of producing industrial volumes of wood) (Forest Watch, 7/91). (la) Comments: Most of Alaska's forest lands are inaccessible and/ or of very low quality.

Atlantic tropical forests of Brazil once covered 1 million km2, but by the mid-1980s covered 20,000 km2 (df91W1) (df86L1). (la)
Colombia's forests account for 49%, or 530,364 km2 of Colombia's
total land mass (Central Intelligence Agency, The World Factbook: 1994) (df93W5). (la)
Atlantic tropical forests of Brazil once covered 1 million km2. Around 1990 it covered 20,000 km2 (df91W1). (la)
Original forest area of the tropical Andes Mountains was 101,000 km2. Around 1990 the forest area = 34,800 km2 (df91W1). (la)
Closed forest cover: 7.25 million km2 (over 33% of the land area of Latin America). Open woodlands of Latin America cover another 4 million km2
(df81B1). (la)
Original forests of Latin America covered 6.93 million km2. Estimate for 2000: 3.66 million km2 (df88W2). (la)
The Brazilian Amazon contains 1/3 of the Earth's remaining tropical forests (df89S1).

[10] Asian Sub-Continent
In 1956, the total area covered by natural forest canopy in Sri Lanka was estimated to be 28,700 km2, 44% of total land area. The 1983 estimate: 17,600 km2, 26.6% of land area. In 1992, an interim estimate based on satellite imagery showed that the forest cover was 13300 km2, 20.2% of the land area (df96W2). (la)
Nepal's forest area: 34,000 km2 (df80R3). (la)
Of India's remaining 749,000 km2 of original forest, 304,000 lack tree cover, and 100,000 have only shrubs (df89P2), ((df89P3), p. 359 of (df91J1)). (la)
Forest cover in India was 19.5% according to 1985-87 Landsat data. Total area is 3,287,797 km2. Dense forests (crown density = 40%+) cover 378,470 km2; Open forests (10-40% crown cover) cover 257,409 km2; Mangroves cover 4255 km2. Total cover = 640,134 km2
(df91J2). (la)
[11] Developing World
Developing countries account for 21.23 million km2 (55%) of the world's forests, 18.5 million km2 of which is in tropical developing countries (df03M1). (la)
[12] Far East
Forests covered 250,000 km2 in the mid-1960s, 68% of Japan's total land area. 66,600 km2 of Japan's forests are reserved as "protection" forest for national land safeguard (df68A1). (la)

(4-B) - CLASSES OF FORESTED LANDS -
[1] Plantations, [2] Boreal, [3] Tropical, [4] Temperate Rainforest, [5] Conversions to Non-Forest Uses[1] Plantations
[1A] Plantations - Global
The FAO estimates (in "State of the World's Forests 1997") of global plantation cover: 900,000 km2
in 1980; 1.8 million km2 in 1995 (df98M1). As much as 1 million km2
is for industrial use; about 3/4 of that is planted in slow-growing species (e.g. teak and slower-growing pines); and 25% is in fast-growing species, mostly eucalyptus and the faster-growing pines. These are used mainly for pulpwood, fiberboard and other reconstituted-wood products (df98M1). (la)
Reductions in net deforestation (or gains in forest area) in developing and industrialized countries were mainly due to significant increases in forest plantations
and the succession of forests on abandoned agricultural lands. The current rate of plantation establishment is 45,000 km2/ year worldwide. For the 1990's as a whole, however, it was estimated that about 30,000 km2/ year of plantations were successfully established, half of which constitute reforestation of previously forested lands. There were no significant transitions from plantations into natural forests, or conversions into agricultural lands (df01F1). (la)
Industrial roundwood plantations account for 3% of world's total forest area -- about 1 million km2. However they provide about 22% of the world's industrial roundwood supply (df99B1). (la)
Wood plantations, globally, covered 400,000 km2 in 1993 (df98M1). (la)
Of the estimated 1.87 million km2 of plantations worldwide in 2000, Asia had by far, the largest areas in forest plantation development (df01F1). (la)
Between 1980-90 the (global) area under forest plantations increased from 0.18 to nearly 0.44 million km2. By 2000 it had increased to 1.87 million km2 (df03M1). (la)
For the 1990's as a whole, it was estimated that about 30,000 km2/ year of new forest plantations were successfully established globally (df01F1). (la)
A table of areas of industrial forest plantations, circa 1985, is in Ref. (df88P1). Total area (15 countries + W. Europe + "other") = 917,030 km2. Ref. (df88P1) also tabulates global forest resources circa 1980 (region; closed forest area; open woodlands area; forest fallow- and shrubland area, etc.). (la)
Total plantation area in tropics (12/90): 438,000 km2, including 156,000 km2 of high-yielding industrial forest plantations (df96N1). (la)
Tree plantations occupy 1.8 million km2, split about equally between developed and developing nations. Over 50% of the area is devoted to producing wood fiber, wood panels and sawlogs. The remainder is for conserving soil and water on degraded land or for local benefit (fuelwood, forage etc.) (df98A2). (la)
Worldwide, 1.8+ million km2 of natural forests have been converted to
forest plantations (df98A1). (la)

* Forest areas in developed countries are defined as land where tree crowns cover 20% of the area, including: open forests, forest roads and fire breaks, temporarily cleared areas, young stands expected to achieve at least 20% crown-cover upon maturity. Forest areas in developed countries are not broken down into subcategories of natural forests and plantations due to difficulty in distinguishing the two in many countries.

[1B] Plantations - Europe
Spain has more than 50,000 km2
of pulp plantation, much of it growing on former farmland (df98M1). (la)
Nearly all the forest covering 15% of Scotland are plantations of non-native conifers (df98A2). (la)
[1C] Plantations - Latin America
Monterey pine now covers 13,000 km2 of Chile's plantation land
(df98M1). (la)
Latin America's forest-plantation area has increased 50% in the past 12 years -- to 75,000 km2 (df98M1). (la)
Brazil's 50,000 km2 of wood plantations accounts for 60% of its industrial wood production (df98M1). (la)
A 1995 Central Bank of Chile report estimates that 1200 km2 of Chilean forest are destroyed each year. Of this, 600-900 km2 are replaced with tree plantations (df97H2). (la)
Plantations of exotic species occupy 20% of Uruguay's forested land (df80W4). (Natural forest occupy 2.9% of Uruguay's 186,926 km2
(df80W4)). (la)
[1D] Plantations - Australia and Oceania
Tasmania (Australian island): 1400 km2 of pine and eucalyptus plantations have been installed, much of it after native old-growth forests were felled and chipped (df98M1). (la)
New Zealand's 16,000 km2 of plantation forest (primarily Monterey pine) are expanding by 700 km2/ year (df98A2). (la)
[1E] Plantations - Southeast Asia
As much as 60% of Indonesia's 20,000 km2 of wood plantations is thought to have directly displaced natural forests. Indonesia plans to have 60,000 km2 of plantations by 2010 (df98M1). (la)
[1F] Plantations - North America
Pine plantation cover in the southeastern US grew by 80,000 km2
between 1952 and 1985, while natural pine forest cover declined by 120,000 km2
(df99A2). (la)

[2] Boreal Forests
Boreal forests cover 11% of the earth's surface and include a third of the world's forests (df95A2). 70% of the world's boreal forests are in Russia (df95A2). (la)
The global area of boreal forests is given as 11.1 million km2
(se82P2) (6.9 million km2 wet and 4.2 million km2 dry)
Boreal forest cover = 12 million km2 (df91S1); 11.7 million km2
(8301); 9.0 million km2 (df79A1). 2/3 is in USSR and Scandinavia; 1/3 is in Canada and Alaska (df91S1). Comments: If boreal forest are apportioned between USSR and Scandinavia according to the relative sizes of the total forest area in these two regions and do the same for Canada vs. Alaska, and assume a total boreal forest inventory of 11.7 million km2, we obtain the following regional inventories: Scandinavia 0.5 million km2; USSR 7.3 million km2; Canada 3.5 million km2; and Alaska 0.4 million km2. (la)
Boreal forests, before Man altered the Earth significantly, were believed to cover 13.4 million km2 (se35J1).
Russia's forests cover 7.7 million km2. Virtually all of Russia's forests are boreal (df95A2). (la)

A few centuries ago, the world's rainforests covered 21.2 million km2. Rainforests now cover 9.07 million km2 (df91J1) (11.95 million km2
according to Ref. (df84B4). (la) Comments: Does this include both temperate and tropical rainforests?
In 1982, tropical rainforests occupied 11,610,350 km2 between the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn in 76 countries (df84G1). (la)
FAO estimates a global inventory of 16 million km2 of closed rainforests around 1900 (The FAO estimate for 1975: 9.4 million km2). (la)

44% of the world's original temperate rainforest is gone, leaving 230,000 km2 left (df93D3). Comments: This suggests an original area of 523,000 km2. (la)
Of the world's original 310,000 km2 of temperate rainforests, 56% have been logged or cleared (df92R2). Comments: This suggests that about 136,000 km2 of temperate rainforest remain. (la)
At least 55% of the world's coastal temperate rainforests have been logged or cleared for other uses, leaving 140,000 km2 (Ref. 7 of (df94D2)). Comments: This suggests an original area of 255,000 km2
for the world's temperate rainforest (la).
230,000 km2 of the world's temperate rainforest
remains (56% of the original) (df93D3).
Coastal temperate rainforest once covered 300,000 to 400,000 km2. The current area is 140,000 km2 (Ref. 8 of (df94D2)). Comments: Temperate rainforests are located mainly on the west coast of Chile, USA, Canada and Alaska. All of these forests are being liquidated rapidly. (la)
[5] Conversions to Non-Forest Uses
During 1970-90, Brazilians converted 100,000 km2
of tropical moist forest to cattle pasture (df91D1) (la).
Bolivia's forest cover is being removed at 3000 km2/ year -- largely for conversion to livestock grazing (p. 357 of (df91J1)). (la)
During 1966-78, 80,000 km2 of Amazon forest became cattle ranches (df84P1). (la)
During 1970-90, Latin Americans converted over 200,000 km2 of tropical moist forest to cattle pasture (100,000 in the Brazilian Amazon, 15,000 in the Colombian Amazon, and 5000 in the Peruvian Amazon) (df91D1). (la)
Since 1970 (the 1960s according to (og90W1)), Latin American farmers and ranchers have converted more that 200,000 km2 of moist tropical forest to cattle pasture (100,000 in Brazilian Amazon, 15000 in Colombian Amazon, 5000 in Peru). These pastures are productive for less than 10 years when weed invasions and P deficiencies limit forage growth (og91D1) (og90W1). (la) (See Section (5-A)[4])
Since 1960, over 40% of Central America's rain forest has been converted to cattle grazing (p. 356 of (og91J1)). (la) (See Section (5-A).)
Over 50% of the 300-mile-long New Caledonia and 1/3 of 18,000-km2
Fiji Islands (S. Pacific) were converted to pasture by around 1990 (df91J1). (la)
During 1961-85, 100,000 km2 of Thailand's forestland were converted to agricultural land (80% of total forest encroachment) (df88P4). (la)
See the table on Forest-Land-Grazing-Land Tradeoffs in Section (4-A) [13] (Central America)
